Lewis and Clark in the Classroom, 1:30 to 3:30, 20 June 2008, -

Lewis and Clark in Context - Dr. Vernon Pedersen, Professor of History at the University of Great Falls sets the Lewis and Clark expedition into the context of the early Nineteenth Century including the Napoleonic Wars, American democracy, relations with the Indian nations and slavery.

What Happened to the Dog? - Professor Craig Ganster, of the Criminal Justice Program at the University of Great Falls, will talk about one of the most important expedition members, Lewis' dog Seaman. Professor Gangster will be assisted by one or more of his own Newfoundland dogs who will bring life to Seaman's adventures.

Lewis and Clark Reenacted - Long time Corps of Discovery re-enactor Pete Woelkers demonstrates the skills needed to recreate historical characters and relates some of his less serious experiences impersonating a member of the expedition.

Field Experience Options:
Excursion one:
Lewis and Clark on the Upper Missouri -
Spend the morning touring historic sites in Ft. Benton, once the center of fur trading, and transport on the upper Missouri. Don Peterson, longtime Lewis and Clark historian, will accompany the tour for a "backstage" experience available to only a few privileged groups. After lunch on the banks of the Missouri participants will board river rafts courtesy of Craig Madsen's Montana River Outfitters and drift down river seeing the area the way Lewis and Clark saw it. Both Don Peterson and Craig Madsen will guide the river float trip guaranteeing a tremendous experience by all.
Be certain to bring water, raingear, sunscreen and a hat. River gear provided. Length of float trip will vary depending on weather and river conditions.

Excursion two:
Centuries of Montana -
Truly put the Lewis and Clark Expedition into context with this coach tour guided by University of Great Falls historian Vernon Pedersen. The tour departs from the Interpretive center and makes its first stop at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, one of the largest buffalo jumps in the United States. Participants will tour the museum and enjoy the spectacular view from the top of the butte. The next stop is Gates of the Mountains, one of the most dramatic areas encountered by the expedition. Enjoy lunch at the lakeside pavilion followed by a boat tour of the Gates including a stop at the head of Mann Gulch, site of the 1949 Mann Gulch fire immortalized by Norman Mclean in Young Men and Fire. The tour then departs for Helena and a visit to the Capitol building and the justly famous Montana State Historical society. Time permitting the group will also stop at Tower Rock, Montana's newest state park.
